The Battery Passport

The EU Battery Passport is a mandatory digital document, accessible via QR code, required for all EV, LMT, and industrial batteries (>2 kWh) sold in the EU from February 18, 2027.

It acts as a digital twin documenting the entire lifecycle (raw materials, carbon footprint, sustainability) to enhance transparency, safety, and circular economy practices.

NOWOS supports customers with an existing Battery Passport or those needing one.

EU BATTERY REGULATION 2023/1542

LIFECYCLE DATA

EV, LMT, INDUSTRIAL BATTERIES >2 kWh

FEBRUARY 18, 2027

Key Aspects

  • Required for electric vehicle (EV) batteries, Light Means of Transport (LMT) batteries, and industrial batteries with a capacity > 2 kWh.

  • February 18, 2027, deadline: Mandatory for all qualifying batteries in the EU market

  • Passports need to include technical specifications (chemistry, capacity, manufacturer), carbon footprint, recycled content, material origin, and "state of health" (SOC/SOH) for second-life use and recycling.

  • A unique, physical QR code will be placed on the battery, linking to its digital record.

  • The regulation aims to reduce the environmental impact of batteries, promote sustainable sourcing, and facilitate recycling to ensure a circular economy.

  • Who is responsible? The economic operator (manufacturer, importer) placing the battery on the market is responsible for creating and providing the passport.

As an expert in battery maintenance, central in the value chain, NOWOS is ready to provide customers with a Battery Passport solution.
